About Indore District (Madhya Pradesh)
Indore district is a district of Madhya Pradesh state with its administrative headquarters located at Indore city. The Natives of the district believe that once upon a time Raja Indra Singh made his journey to conquer Ujjain but in the mid of his journey he felt tired and laid a camp on the bank of the Kanh River (today’s Khan River). At that time he saw the mesmerising natural sceneries of the place and he decided to establish a Shivling at the meeting point of the two very prominent rivers namely Kanh and Saraswati. After sometime he constructed the Indreshwar temple and called the place as Indrapur. Later the name of the place was changed to Indur under the Maratha Rule. The present day Indore name was evolved for the first time during the British raj. Apart from the stories associated with its name, the place has an interesting history too. The headquarters of the local pargana were shifted from Kampel to Indore by 1720, since the commercial activities were increasing at a great speed in the city. During the rule of Nizam on 18th May 1724, they accepted the demands of the Maratha Peshwa Baji Rao I to collect chauth (taxes) from the area. Then in 1733, Malwa was totally under the control of Peshwa and appointed his commander, Malhar Rao Holkar as the Subhedar (Governor) of the province. Later in 1818, these Holkars were defeated in the hands of British in the Third Anglo-Maratha War and in the Battle of Mahidpur, the capital was changed from Maheshwar to Indore. At that time, Indore was established the headquarters of British Central Agency.
Lata Mangeshkar, an eminent Indian singer, play-back singer and occasional music-composer was born on 28th September, 1929 at Indore city. She was honoured by many prestigious awards such as Padma Bhushan in 1969, Padma Vibhushan in 1999, Dada Saheb Phalke Award in 1989, Maharashtra Bhushan Award in 1997, NTR National Award in 1999, Bharat Ratna in 2001 and many more.
Geographically, the district lies at 22°73'N latitude, 75°87'E longitude and 553 m Altitude. In the year 2021, there was a total 17.31% forest area of total geographical area. The district encompasses an area of 3,898 sq km. and in terms of geographical area it occupies the ranks of 43rd in the state and 316th in India. It is bounded by Ujjain district on the north, Dewas district on the east, Khargone district (West Nimar) on the south and Dhar district on the west. The climate of the district is characterised as humid subtropical climate. Most of its rainfall occurs during the monsoon season. The actual rainfall in the district was 1046.2 mm in the year of 2021-22.
Administration wise, the district is divided into 4 tehsils namely Depalpur, Sanwer, Indore and Mhow. There are 2 Lok Sabha and 9 Assembly constituencies in the district. Moreover, the district comprises 5 sub-districts, 24 towns and 629 villages. The administrative language in the district is Hindi.
According to 2011 census the district has a population of 32,76,697 including 16,99,627 are males and 15,77,070 are females. The district has a sex ratio of 928 females for every 1000 males. During the year 2001-2011 the population growth rate in the district was 32.88% out of which 31.82% were males and 34.05% were females. The population density in the district is 841 persons per sq. km. In the year 2020 the number of live births in the district was 64,880 out of which 33,454 were males and 31,426 were females. In the same year the number of deaths in the district was 32,309 out of which 19,958 were males and 12,351 were females. As per 2011 census the major religion in the district is Hindu with 83.26% of the total population. According to 2011 census the principal language in the district is Hindi with 88.69%.
Industrially, the district is very well developed. The Textile manufacturing and trading is the oldest business of the district which contributes in its economy to a great extent. Some of its other notable industries are Kinetic Honda, Bajaj Tempo, Eicher Motors, Hindustan Motors, Kores India, Pratap Steel, Prestige Group, Chirag Ingots, Crompton Greaves, Onida Saka, Bridge Stone, Dhar Textile, Larsen & Turbo, Indo German Tools, etc. Every year a huge chunk of revenue comes from these industries. Some of its population are also engaged in agriculture in order to earn their livelihood. The chief agricultural products grows in the district are gram, groundnut, soybean, cotton, jowar, paddy, wheat, etc. In the year 2019-20 the gross domestic product in the district was Rs. 64,87,527 lakhs at current price and Rs. 43,78,420 lakhs at constant prices in the year 2011-2012. The net domestic product in the district during the period 2019-20 was Rs. 58,21,399 lakh at current price and Rs. 38,39,050 lakh at constant prices in the year 2011-2012. The Per Capita Income or NDDP, At Factor Cost during the period 2019-20 was Rs. 1,55,648 at current price and Rs. 1,02,646 at constant prices in the year 2011-2012.
Indore provides a platform for higher education. The Daly College in the district, established in 1882 is one of the oldest co-educational boarding schools in the country. Some other reputed educational institutions in the district are Holkar Science College, Devi Ahilya Vishwavidyalaya, Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Medical College (MGMMC), Shri Govindram Seksaria Institute of Technology and Science (SGSITS), Institute Of Engineering & Science IPS Academy, etc. As per 2011 census the literacy rate in the district is 80.87% including 87.25% are males and 74.02% are females.
Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar, an illustrious Indian jurist, economist, politician and social reformer was born on 14th April, 1891 at Mhow in the district. He was deeply inspired by the Modern Buddhist Movement and campaigned against social discrimination against Untouchables (Dalits), women and labour. After India got independence, he was the first law minister (15th August, 1947-September, 1951) and also the principal architect of the Constitution of India. Digvijaya Singh, a distinguished Indian politician and the 15th Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh was born on 28th February, 1947 at Indore city. He is a member of the Indian National Congress party.
The district has a variety of tourist place which allures many travellers from different parts of the world. Indreshwar temple, situated on the meeting point of Khan and Saraswati Rivers is a temple of Lord Shiva. The Indore city got its name from this very temple. Rajwada Palace, a historical palace located in Indore city was built by the Holkars of the Maratha Empire about two centuries ago. This seven storied structure depicts the royal grandeur and architectural skills. Lal Baag Palace, situated on the outer edge of the Indore city is a three storied building constructed by Maharaja Shivaji Rao Holkar during the period of 1886-1921. After India got independence, King Edward Hall was renamed as Mahatma Gandhi Hall is the most gorgeous building of Indore made in 1904. The building comprises many things including a library, a children park and a temple. Some of its other renowned temples are Khajrana Ganesh Temple, Annapurna Temple, Bada Ganpati, Kanch Mandir, etc.
