Bharuch district is a district of Gujarat state with its administrative headquarters located at Bharuch city. According to the Skanda Purana, during the period of the sage Bhrigu the place was named as 'Bhrigukachchha' since the sage Bhrigu came to this place sitting on a tortoise which is known as Kachchha in Sanskrit language. And with the passage of time the name Bhrigukachchha of the place was changed to its present name Bharuch. The current headquarters city, Bharuch and its surrounding places has been established far back in the ancient times. Earlier, it was a major shipping building centre and a sea port, located in the most vital pre-compass coastal trading routes that points west. Before the period of annual monsoon winds several goods like famed spice and silk from the distance East places were trans-shipped to this place and during that period it was the last stop for many key land-sea trade routes. At that time the Greeks, the different Persian Empires, the Roman Republic and Empire, the other Western civilised centres and every important countries known Bharuch very well until the end of the European Middle Ages.

Tribhuvandas Purushottamdas Luhar, a distinguished Gujarati poet and author was born on 22nd March, 1908 at Miyan matar in the Bharuch district. He was honoured by many prestigious awards namely Ranjitram Suvarna Chandrak in 1934, Narmada Gold Medal in 1955, Sahitya Akademi Award in 1968 and Padma Bhushan in 1985.

Geographically, the district lies at 21°72'N latitude, 73°00'E longitude and 15 m altitude. In the year 2021, there was a total 4.19% forest area of total geographical area. The district encompasses a geographical area of 6,509 sq km. and in terms of geographical area it occupies the ranks of 12th in the state and 152nd in India. It is bounded by Vadodara district on the north, Surat district on the south, Narmada district on the east and Gulf of Cambay on the west. The climate of the district remains hot during the summer. Most of its rainfall occurs in the monsoon season. The actual rainfall in the district was 908.6 mm in the year of 2021-22.

Administration wise, the district is divided into Bharuch, Ankleshwar, Hansot, Jambusar, Jhagadia, Amod, Valia and Vagra. There are 1 Lok Sabha seat and 7 Assembly constituencies in the district. Moreover, the district comprises 21 towns and 653 villages. The administrative language in the district is Gujarati.

According to 2011 census the district has a population of 15,51,019 including 8,05,707 are males and 7,45,312 are females. The district has a sex ratio of 925 females for every 1000 males. During the year 2001-2011 the population growth rate in the district was 13.16% out of which 12.90% were males and 13.45% were females. The population density in the district is 238 persons per sq. km. In the year 2020 the number of live births in the district was 26,465 out of which 13,876 were males and 12,588 were females. In the same year the number of deaths in the district was 16,707 out of which 10,339 were males and 6,368 were females. As per 2011 census the major religions in the district are Hindu and Muslim with 76.61% and 22.15% of the total population. According to 2011 census the principal language in the district is Gujarati with 90.02%.

The economy of the district is based on different sectors such as textiles, drugs, chemicals and petrochemicals, and pharmaceuticals and ports and ship building. There are only a few private industries which includes Guardian Corporation, Videocon, Welspun-Stahl Rohrren, Aventis, Badische Anilin-und Soda-Fabrik (BASF), Reliance, Rallis, Pfizer, Larson and Toubro (L & T), Bayer, Tatas, Aditya Birla Group, Wockhardt, Glenmark, Lupin and Gujarat Fluoro chemicals Ltd. Every year a huge chunk of revenue comes from these industries helps in its economy to a great extent. Some of its population are also engaged in agriculture in order to earn their livelihood. The chief agricultural products in the district are cotton, sugarcane, tuwar, wheat, jowar, etc. The adoption of the new agricultural technologies amongst the famers of the district helps to increase the production of various agricultural items. The district is also rich in mineral resources like lignite, fuller's earth, silica, agate, limestone and calcite.

The district is an abode of several reputed educational institutions. It provides a platform for higher education. Shree Narmada Sanskrit Ved Pathashala, one of the oldest educational institutions in the district which is 115-year-old and imparts education in Sanskrit at school, graduate and post-graduate levels. Some other recognised educational institutions in the district are Government Engineering College, Shri Sad Vidya Mandal Institute of Technology, Valia Institute of Technology, Narmada College of Science and Commerce, Shri Manilal Kadakia College of Management and Computer Studies, Narmada College of Management, Vivekanand Institute of Medical Science, etc. As per 2011 census the literacy rate in the district is 81.51% including 87.45% are males and 75.09% are females.

Ahmed Patel, an eminent Indian politician and a member of 5th, 6th and 7th Lok Sabha from the Bharuch constituency was born on 21st August, 1949 at Bharuch city. He is a senior leader of the Indian National Congress party.

The district has numerous centres of attraction which allures many travellers from different parts of the country as well as world. Bhrigu Rishi temple, the renowned holy temple is located on the eastern part of Bharuch. The ancient temple was built in the memory of Maharishi Bhrigu. Pilgrims from the far distance place comes to this temple to offer their prayers. Swaminarayan temple, constructed over 175 years ago is situated at Dandia Bazar. This temple is very famous among visitors since it is decorated with different colours on its walls. Narmadamata temple, a 150 years old temple is dedicated to Goddess Narmada, located at Dandia Bazar. The Golden Bridge was constructed by the British across the Narmada River in 1881 in order to facilitate their trade to Mumbai. Some other places of interest in the district are Vaishnav Haveli, Nav Nathas, Gurudwara Chadar Saheb, Raichand Deepchand Library, etc.
